<summary type="text">Assessing market participation among sorghum producers in Aukot sub-county, Soroti district
Onyonge, Denis
Smallholder farmers constitute the largest share of farm households in Uganda and many of them are poor. A way out of poverty for them is to address market related problems. In this paper, the market options available to these farmers, as well as market related factors that are problematic were investigated. Primary data were collected from 120 sorghum farmers in Aukot Sub-county, Soroti District. All the sampled farmers produce and sell sorghum (n=120) in their households, The average landholder allocated to sorghum production was noted to be small and varied between 1 to 2 acres as shown in Table 2. The majority of the farmers (n=115) reported that the main reason for which they grow sorghum is for both food and income for the household (95.8%). The major variety of sorghum grown by the farmers was SESO3 (65.0%), following NAROSORG2 (18.3%), NAROSORG3 (12.5%). The main reason the farmers fronted for growing the specified sorghum varieties was that of being high yielding (65.0%) and early maturing (27.5%). Farmers considered mainly the height and maturity period (52.5%), and the head color, size and shape (47.5%) to identify the sorghum variety for growing. The main cropping systems in the sorghum cultivation were intercropping 58.3% (n=70) and crop rotation 41.7% (n=50). On how they rate the fertility of their land, the majority of the farmers (75.8%) reported that their land was fertile. The study identified four markets options and the most prioritized was the local market. The study results show that, market price, farm size, education and total sorghum produced, road condition, primary occupation and transaction costs significantly affect famers’ market participation. Policy interventions that seek to improve these factors are very important to market participation.

This research study was about Assessing Uptake of Upland Rice growing in Kabwangasi sub-county Butebo District.  Farmers in this District have been growing wetland rice but due to government policies of evacuation of wetlands farmers have started adopting the growing of upland rice in the district. Rice (oryza sativa) is a cereal grain grass plant in the family of poaceae.&#13;
The earliest archaeological evidence come from central and eastern China and dates to 7000-5000 BCE (Britannica, 2024). Despite the potential benefits of upland rice production, farmers' have been growing wetland rice, leading to low adoption levels of upland rice growing.. According to (Amare, 2018). The main objective was assessing factors affecting adoption of upland rice production in Kabwangasi Sub-county Butebo District. The purpose of this study was to develop recommendations for the adoption levels of upland rice cultivation among farmers. The specific objectives included: characterizing rice farmers in Kabwangasi Sub-county, assessing uptake of upland rice farming in Kabwangasi Sub-county. A qualitative cross-sectional survey was conducted to collect data from 103 participants. Using a random sampling approach, 103 respondents were selected from four parishes within Kabwangasi Sub-county, Butebo District. Data analysis was carried out using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, with results presented in tables.

Najjengo, Godinah
The study aimed to investigate the various market outlets used by smallholder vanilla farmers, their profitability, and factors influencing market channel choice. The sample size was picked using simple random sampling. 100 respondents were selected, and the population of the farmers revealed the average age of farmers was 47 years. The study revealed most cultivate on an average of 1 acre with low formal education however most of these farmers had experience in vanilla production with a mean of 11.8 years. There were two primary market outlets got from the field which were middlemen and cooperative. In terms of price, middlemen offered an average of 13,000shs while cooperatives offered an average of 27,700shs per kilogram of vanilla. Results from a multivariate probit showed that 5 out of 10 variables were significant, including farmers' experience, education, proximity to market, price sold, plus family size. Results for profitability by channels show that cooperatives were more profitable with a 76% gross margin while middlemen as a channel resulted into 63%. &#13;
Recommendations were drawn from the study advising farmers to keep away from selling to middlemen since they take advantage of them. Farmers are also advised to join cooperatives since they provide significantly better profitability and other financial benefits like seminars, workshops and extension support.

Nagudi, Nibra
The main objective of the study was to assess the determinants of the choice of marketing channels among small scale Matooke farmers in Sironko district. Data was collected through a researcher administered questionnaire to 203 Matooke small holder farmers in Bumasifwa sub-county, Sironko district.&#13;
Descriptive statistics specifically the frequency tables, pie charts, bar graphs were used to analyse the social-economic characteristics of farmers such as house hold size, age, gender, marital status, occupation, education level.&#13;
The findings emanated from the multivariate regression model revealed that factors such as, distance from the farm to the nearest market centre, Educational level of the small holder Matooke farmers, , quantity of Matooke produced significantly influenced the choice of the marketing channel among the small holder Matooke farmers in the study area. Policies aimed at improving the farmers access to marketing channels should be informed by these factors.
