Abstract:
Community outreach is one of the course units in the BSA curriculum at Busitema University. This course unit is done in the second year, second semester, the major objective of this course unit is acquisition of extension skills where a student is expected to enter into the community,
identify several problems faced by farmers and give various solutions or a contribution towards problem solving in the community. I conducted my community outreach with Kalulu sub county local government Yumbe district.
During community reach I was attached to the department of production and marketing this was followed by orientation where I was first introduced to the subcounty technical staff and the politician and later I implemented the activities such as; Training of farmers on selected field crops and other government programs like parish development model so as to equip farmers with general knowledge and skills in identifying and solving problems now and then, Field verification exercise with the aim of ascertaining the ready fields ready to receive seeds.
Distribution of pomology seedlings, bean seeds, cassava cuttings which improved on technology adaption within the subcounty , Pits prepared for the planting of banana (matoke) with the aim of improving food security and house hold income follow-up of activities implemented none governmental organization like DRDIP ,NRC, WELT HUNGER ZOA establishment of woodlots for restoration of environment joint monitoring of projects to check on the progress (implementation status data collection for proper planning ,formation of committee in various project like WE ARE ABLE for proper coordination of the project,pests and disease management this was to increase production and productivity of field crops , technical back stoppmg on excavation of valley tank to trap runoff (ground water) which ensured continuous production of crops majorly vegetables such as tomatoes,watermelon and cabbage In conclusion the short period of time spend at kululu sub county local government triggered and shaped me in the areas associated with the dynamics of local government work. Not only did I gain knowledge and practical skills, but I was also given chance to share practical hands on knowledge experience with the field community farmers I do recommend the management should prioritize and increase on the budget allocated for their farmers so as promote production and productivity of technologies.
