Abstract:
This report was generated from various activities carried out at Busitema University Arapai Campus Farm with the main objective of giving hands on experience to students on different fields of agriculture.
DCP 1208 industrial training is one of the course modules conducted within the University farm. It includes several sections like the following; poultry, piggery, small ruminants, cattle, apiary, aquaculture, orchard, annual crops, mushroom, horticulture, Botanical garden, workshops skill and agroforestry.
The main objectives are to enable students carry out practical activities in the university farm, develop interest in agricultural profession and better appreciate the intervention, acquaint students of the basic practices done in the crop and animal production, the methods of knowledge and skills dissemination used during the industrial training period. It included lectures, groups, individual assignments, demonstrations. Some of the activities performed are; pest and disease identification in both animals and plants, control and management in crops and animals, management and identification of important pasture and legumes identification and management, poultry, piggery, and goats’ management among others. This industrial training enabled me to acquire skills and knowledge such as; pests and diseases identification and management, livestock production and management, as pasture/legumes identification management.
Basically the activities carried out gives comprehensive understanding of what has been covered in class, However, some challenges were encountered during the training period which includes; poor time management both by students and technicians/instructors, poor turn up by the instructors
in some sections, limited facilities to be use in some section by the students especially during disease diagnosis e.g. clinical thermometers and others.
Despite the challenges stipulated above, I am happy that the training ended successfully.
