Abstract:
This industrial training report was carried out at Katikekile sub county in Moroto district in the academic year 2021/2022 starting 22th /08/2022 to 14th /10 /2022 with the objectives of exposing student to field work activities, helping farmers learn scientific modern agriculture and to disseminate the new innovations in farming through extension service and field visits to improve farmers standards of living. Katikekile S/C was involved in training farmers and giving out seeds for vegetable growers, the activities carried out during the intern period were; identifying the common crops grown, farming methods, pests and diseases of common crops, measures and economic importance of pests, identifying the common weeds in the area, and good agronomic practices, raising and managing the nursery bed, making compost manure, banana pruning and corm removal, erosion control, weeding of onions, back to school campaign, storage of grains and store management, soil and water conservation using mulches, and I understood soil profile, structure and texture practically.
During the industrial training, I experienced challenges namely insecurity in the area and I was advised to leave the site early, most of the farmlands were located in mountainous area and it involved climbing, last but not least I faced challenge in report writing but I sought guidance from someone who had an idea.
I practically gained skills in soil erosion control by strip cropping, conserve soil and water by using mulches, raising and managing the nursery bed, making compost manure, disease and pests’ identification and their control.
I managed to complete the industrial training amidst prevailing challenges, I practically appreciated lessons obtained in lectures by relating to real world practices in the field and all the training objectives were met. The sub county is working hard to fulfil its vision and mission by 2040.
I recommend the district authority to provide security for the field personnel, Sub County to create demonstration plots in a flat area, farmers should also be trained on horticultural production so as to increase on their income. I also, recommend the university to equip the students with report writing skills and to contribute part of paid industrial training money as a startup for the student during internship.
