Abstract
This study investigated the influence of the quality of stakeholders‘ engagement on the quality of school facilities management in government-aided secondary schools in Tororo District in Uganda. The study considered stake holders including Board of Governors, Headteachers, members of PTA, and teachers in these schools. The study focused on school facilities such as classrooms, library, science and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratories. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey research design, drawing on quantitative as well as qualitative research approaches with a sample size of 99 participants. Simple random sampling and purposive sampling techniques were respectively adopted for the quantitative and qualitative arms of the study. Instruments of data collection were a questionnaire and an interview guide. The questionnaire was reliable (Cronbach Alpha coefficient, α = 0.905) and valid (CVI = .877). Quantitative data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The results revealed (a) a moderate quality of facilities management, (b) a strong statistically significant positive influence of Board of governors‘ roles on the quality of school facilities management (B= -0.276, t = -0.813, p < .05), (c) a strong statistically significant influence of PTA Members‘ roles on quality of school facilities management (B = 0.758, t = 3.290, p < .05), and (d) a strong statistically significant influence of head teachers‘ roles on the quality of school facilities management (B = 0.300, t = 0.889, p < .05) in Tororo District. It was argued that roles of members of the Board of Governors including planning/decision making, soliciting for finances, procurement process/deliveries, supervision and coordination were very necessary to influence school facilities management in government-aided secondary schools. Implications for policy and practice were further discussed and recommended. |
