Abstract:
This is an internship report which was done at Delight Nwoya farm in Nwoya District. It's a farm which deals mainly in fruit production though other sections like the goats, sheep, and the piggery section. This is aimed at production of beef and juice for export and for local consumption within the country. This industrial training carried out at delight Nwoya farm was aimed at providing hands on skills to the students like me and to enhance the theoretical knowledge that is leant from the class. These are the objectives of the study; to gain practical skills, to extend what was got at school to the field. The training was done very well and the activities are as follows; I did field excursion, field laboratory preparation of fruit fly traps, deployment of fruit fly traps, monitoring the fruit fly traps, recharging the fruit fly traps, and fruit harvesting. Those were the integrated pest management practices. Other activities are; nursery management practices like root pruning, hardening off, pest and disease control, nutrient management, sorting and grading of nursery plants, vegetative propagation activities like budding and grafting, marcoting, layering. Orchard establishment activities like site selection and identification, layout/lining, marking, pitting, planting, post planting inspection. Orchard management practices like training and pruning, fire management, field scouting for pests and diseases, watering, and weeding. In the animal section, cleaning, spraying of the animals against external parasites, deworming against internal parasites, castration, and the last but not least was the store management where agrochemicals were showed to us on how to use them well. I gained several skills like castration, pruning, and training of young mangoes among others. However, the challenges met are lthe anguage barrier, sic ness, and harsh climatic condition. I recommend that more emphasis should be put on the health sector; more languages like Kiswahili should be added in universities. More drugs for the treatment of the animals should be improved. Generally industrial training was a success as the main objectives were all met during the study.
