Community and farm practices report conducted at Nicko ventures limited Soroti, from 28/02/2022 to 4/04/2022.

Abstract

Community and farm practice (BSA2209) is one of the course units’ modules) done by BSA two students immediately after their second-semester examinations in partial fulfillment for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Science in agriculture of Busitema University. It requires one to undertake and complete nine weeks of community attachment in a reputable agricultural-related institution with community development and extension programs. This report contains information on activities I carried out in NVL from 28/02/2022 to 27/04/2022. During the community and farm practice, I actively participated in the following activities both in animal and crop; draining water from the fish pond, grading fish, feeding fish and chicks, vaccinating of the birds, candling eggs, farm visits, welcoming and attending to farmers whom to visit, brooding chicks, preparation of nursery beds, raising shades for the nursery beds, washing drinkers and feeders, preparation of the brooder to receive chicks and selling of the chicks. This community and farm practice enabled me to gain the following skills; Gained knowledge of fish pond management i.e draining water and grading fish, Learnt various ways of administering vaccines, Learnt how to care for the chicks in the brooder and prepare brooder to receive the chicks, Gained skills on nursery bed management, My public speech skills were improved since it involved talking with farmers, Gained skills on the marketing of agricultural products, Learnt how the incubator works and also how to use egg candling machine. Although I gained I faced the following challenges; Power fluctuation affected the viability of eggs when it was off for the whole week. The office is small yet all the departments share the same office and the company was in economic recovery from lock down. The company should develop the spirit of saving so that it's not much affected by the pandemics, Proper planning and budgeting so that money for emergencies like power cut off can be catered for since the generator is available and the problem is only fuel, build different offices for different departments, create a website for advertising and marketing of products and services products.
