Abstract:
This industrial training was carried out at Kasokwe Sub-county in Kaliro district for a period of two months from 28th Feb 2022 to 06th May 2022 mainly on crop, animal sections, and poultry, value addition, farmers’ groups in the Sub-county,
The objectives of this industrial training was to enable me to interact with different people in their respective professions of all levels like field supervisor, farmers, and employers, to get knowledge in managing crops, animals and other agricultural activities, and to acquire skills which are practical and to relate them to the theory studied from the classroom and t et exposed to the field for more knowledge so as to know how to work with the community and to be able to solve some challenges.
The IT activities include orientation activities like to know all the parishes and local council one in the Sub-county, land preparation for the planting of ginger plants, land preparation for banana planting, selecting and cleaning banana suckers before planting, de-suckering, mulching of a banana plantation, pest and disease identification in banana plus their signs and symptoms plus their control measures, identifying the common pests and diseases that attack coffee plants in the Sub-county their signs and symptoms plus control measures, stumping and pruning of coffee plants, shading, livestock management activities like ear tagging, castration, measuring of animal weights and temperatures, finding out the most common poultry species and common method of poultry keeping in the Sub-county, milking, value addition on sugarcane and others.
The challenges I faced during my IT were a lack of cooperation between and among the farmers in the Sub-county over leadership and which made my work very difficult, inadequate tools and equipment to use during the practical, poor infrastructures like roads this limited me from reaching other parishes in the Sub-county especially Busanda, long distances to other villages and parishes.
The skills I gained during my IT enabled me during the castration of a Billy goat using an open method of castration using a surgical blade, pest and disease control using cultural methods like timely weeding, crop rotation, and keeping the field or garden clean, field management practices on both coffee and banana plantations for better yields.
