Abstract:
This report contains and describes the activities implemented, skills and qualifications gained: challenges faced during the industrial training, conclusion of the report, and recommendations. The objective of this industrial training was. to make me benefit from the skills and knowledge gained from the fields and to apply the knowledge in the classroom and also build my confidence in handling animal-related issues in future.
During the period of two months that is to say 28th Feb to 6th May 2022, I conducted my industrial training from Dokolo District Local Government, production department being supervised by the DVO as the field supervisor and the DPMO, Dokolo as the senior supervisor. DDLG is located on Soroti-Lira highway. It was open officially as a district in the year 2006. The production department of the district was established with the aim of improving the production and productivity of livestock e.g., bovines, caprines, porcines, ovines and poultry among others.
The department is headed by the D.P. O, D.V. O, D.AO, Fisheries officer at the District and at the Sub- County we have the Agricultural officer, Fisheries officer and Assistant Animal husbandry officer. To achieve the above objectives and aim, I was involved in many activities in the field such as: Meat inspection, treatment of animals, routine management practices, training of farmers, livestock vaccination; monitoring of OWC inputs, and spraying of animals
The above activities were carried out successfully however among challenges like long distances, rigidity by farmers, poor mobilization, no financial support and lack of proper transport. I therefore recommend that proper mobilization of farmers must improve for the training programs to solve the problems of poor turn up during such activities, government should also increase the number of motorcycles to solve transport problems and more equipment and veterinary to be provided so that animals are treated and vaccinated in time.
