Abstract:
This internship report contains and describes the activities that were implemented, skills, knowledge and qualifications attained, challenges faced during the industrial training, conclusions and the recommendations derived from the challenges faced at the IRIIRI Sub county, Napak District local government.
The objective of this industrial training was to make the student benefit from the skills and knowledge attained from the field, Apply the skills and the knowledge they gained from the classroom and gain confidence.
The internship commenced on the (28 of February and was completed on the 22 of April 2022). During the internship was attached to the sector of veterinary and animal science, and supervised by the Principle. veterinary officer (DVO). The initial activities included orientation to government policies such as code of conduct, working hours and the sub-county human resource structure.
Field visits were conducted so as to get acquainted with the parishes and the villages of the sub county and it included meeting the parish chief's local council ones, kraal leaders, livestock owners and herd's men, we also visited major livestock grazing areas in Nabwal, pillars, Namendera and drinking points, not forgetting the livestock markets of koomo and lorengecora cattle markets which are on weekly basis.
Together with my field supervisor, tasks were allocated and followed by developing work plans that guided scheduled of field activities. Major activities carried included the following: conducted the sub county technical planning committee meetings, Inspection of livestock and issuing of inter-district veterinary Health certificates permitting the movement of animals outside the district, prophylactic treatment administered to cattle and shoats that had showed some signs of infection, conducted planning meeting and mobilization of farmers for vaccination of livestock against FMD, PPR and ANTI RABIES. Spraying of animals against ticks at the quarantine station was also conducted, vaccination of bovines, shoats and pets was done, community sensitization on public, Health (meat inspection for zoonotic disease control) conducted, held dissemination meeting on the findings on study done for the suitability of HAY production for the district by an NGO call GIZ operating in Napak district at IRIIRI sub county. Had joint monitoring of the Sub county projects, Dehorning and Hoof trimming of the shoats was also done, attended a meeting with CAHWS and the NDA staff pertaining the management and handling and usage of veterinary drugs, carried out routine livestock disease surveillance, advising livestock owners on husbandry practices, Disease diagnosis and treatment
Experiences learnt during the internship included developing participatory work schedules, conducting practical activities during trainings and active involvement of livestock owners in the training sessions. The key lesson learnt was mainly the involvement of community CAHWs in conducting livestock disease surveillance and treatment of livestock. The approach seems more sustainable, since the CAHWs work and live within the communities, Livestock inspection, procedures and techniques attained during internship.
Major challenges encountered during the training included the following: insecurity due to rampart cattle theft among the communities, Negative attitude by some farmers towards vaccination of livestock, limited funding towards the sector of veterinary as this could not allow the sector to operate fully, heavy tick infestation in cattle, high levels of tick borne diseases especially ECF, Anaplasmosis and Heart water, then helminthiasis in calves and shoats.
A comprehensive report was then developed basing on the information collected during field activities.
