This report contains and describes different activities implemented, skills and qualifications gained, challenges faced during the industrial training, conclusion of the report and recommendations derived from the challenges faced at kapeke sub county, kiboga District Local Government in central Uganda. The objective of this industrial training is to make students benefit from the skills and knowledge gained from the fields, apply the knowledge they get from the classroom in the field and build confidence in the students. At the time of internship, I was attached to the department of animal production (veterinary section). I was introduced to my field supervisor Dr. Kitosi Denis (veterinary officer kapeke Sub County) by Dr. Tingira JB (DVO kiboga district). I was oriented and I was given brief history about kapeke sub county, its vision and mission statement and later I implemented the activities such as; disease diagnosis and blood smear(microscopy), study tours to farms like MUNK farm in Kiboga, Kabiswa dairy farm in Namayumba, Julius' farm in Busunju learning management skills, surgery (castration, eye surgery, C-section), attending production district review and planning meetings, dehorning, branding, tick control trough spraying, vaccination of dogs against rabies, vaccination of goats against PPR, immunization of healthy cattle against blackleg, castration of goats, development of communication skills and confidence when talking to farmers. These activities have equipped me with a lot of skills and knowledge in animal production and have made me a better animal scientist to favorably deliver service for the betterment of the veterinary sector, I also face some challenges like; Long distance moved from Bukomero sub county where is used to stay to kapeke sub county on a daily basis was costly to me as a student that does not earn, heavy rainfall that used to inconvenience some activities while in the field and limited our movements as planned, resistance from some farmers that specifically wanted my field supervisor alone to handle any case on their animals hence limiting me from getting repeated exposure to some case, poor roads in the cattle corridle that are soggy after raining was also a challenge during the internship since some places were difficult to reach on time, I was in position of getting practical skills and knowledge in line with my career and relating with people in the field. I provided technical advise and recommendations to addressed farmers' problem and needs. |
