The industrial training was carried out at NaSARRI in Serere district for a period of 10 weeks from 28th Feb, 2022- 6th May 2022. It was aimed at equipping students with practical knowledge and professional skills in correlation with classroom work. During my training I was attached to different programmes like oil crop programme, dry land legumes, dry land cereals, fibre crop and farm management programme. Under the above programmes, I was able to conduct a number of activities which include the following; Field marking to determine the correct plant spacing and plant population, Emasculation, pollination and crossing in different crops, thinning in sorghum, raising of nursery beds for vegetable growing, planting of finger millet in rows, pest and disease identification, post-harvest handling and many others, However, I encountered some challenges during my industrial training like unfavorable climate conditions prolonged drought] that interfered with many activities which were to be done, inadequate tools and equipments to be used at the field. In conclusion, the training was successfully done because I was able to acquire more of practical knowledge and skills in relation to my class room theory like identification of common pests and diseases that attack crops and their control measures, plant breeding, agronomic practices, identification of different crop varieties in different programmes. Finally, I recommend that the university should give students more time to do more practicals during industrial training and to the Institution, more tools and equipments should be provided for effective practice. |
