Abstract:
Outreach is one of the course modules done at Busitema University Arapai Campus aimed at equipping Students with practical skills and exposing them to working conditions in specific courses studied. The -university distributes students in different groups to nearby villages to conduct with different fanners around the university to do extension: work, I carried out mv outreach in. Arapai A village found. in Arapai sub county Soroti district from 12th March to 16th April 2021. During the outreach, I did a lot of activities like Digging of the rubbish pits, making nursery beds, constructing energy saving stoves, Hand picking infested oranges, from the citrus tree (pest management) and burying them, weeding and pruning in citrus, pruning and earthing up banana plantations, deworming of animals, collecting litter to put in the rubbish pit, advising the farmer on how to construct charcoal energy saving stove and to maintain it keeping animals health and how to maintain sanitation in their homes. While during outreach, I faced several challenges like Language barrier, inadequate requirements e.g. hoes, Limited time allocated Absentism of some selected farmers Bad working conditions e.g., heavy sunshine, poor, laziness of the fanners in maintain sanitation, Chapter one describes the Iocation of Arapai zone A and. background of outreach, chapter two describes the activities that I carried out, Chapter three explains the challenges faced and skills learnt during the period of outreach and chapter four conclusions and my recommendations.
All in all, my outreach was successfully carried out because of the much practical knowledge that I got. However, there is a lot needed to improve the agricultural sector as there is low production. Therefore, there is need to greatly improve to modem fanning practices and also adoption of sustainable agriculture therefore I recommend the University through agricultural workers(students) to sensitize and train farmers on ways and practices of modern.
