I carried out my industrial training at Livestock experimental station farm under NAGRC &DB which is located at Entebbe municipality near Entebbe international airport with aims of applying the principals and techniques theoretically learnt in class into real life problem solving situations, get more knowledge of work ethics, employment demands, responsibilities and opportunities and apply basic research concepts especially data gathering and analysis. I got participated in activities cleaning pig sty, feeding of animals and birds, slashing, deworming, castration, ear tagging, milking, washing milking utensils, embryo collection, artificial insemination, dipping, cleaning parlor, vaccination, candling, sorting of eggs turning litter, disease diagnosis and treatment
Those activities enabled me to successfully gain skills in using the dip stick, dipping animals and dip management, how to differentiate breeds of dairy cattle, administering of drugs to animals through different routes, gained skills in vaccinating chicks against mareks and new castle disease, diagnosing animals’ diseases and carrying out post-mortem, record keeping hatchery skills and more knowledge like egg sorting, regulating temperature in an incubator and rules governing hatchery.
Conclusively, I faced some challenges like Poor condition of some farm structure, shortages of water for livestock, lack of enough tools and equipment used in carrying out different activities, shortage of feeds, Harsh climatic conditions like heavy rains.
I therefore recommend the managing staff of LES farm that more farm buildings should be constructed to reduce on overcrowding of livestock, Feeds should be purchased in plenty to minimize shortages. Water supply system should be improved and more storage tanks purchased to reduce water shortages, more farm tools should be purchased to enable each student participate in the activities fully. |
