A report on industrial training carried out Moyo district veterinary office.

Abstract

Busitema University, Arapai campus Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Sciences is a government institute located in Soroti and undertaking courses in Agriculture which include bachelors and diploma in animal production and management (APM) and (DAP), Bachelors of Science in Agriculture (BSA), Bachelors in Agribusiness (BAD), and diploma in crop production and management (DCP). Industrial training is a course module that is carried out by all programs in the institute. The major objectives of this internship was to equip students with the practical skills under agriculture in order to back up the theory knowledge that they have obtained from class, to expose them to the different field activities and how they are handled and lastly to relate the theory knowledge learnt in lecture room weith the practical carried out. This internship was held at Moyo district in the district veterinary office, which is located at the heart off the town. The industrial training was held for 10 weeks. During the industrial training, I participated in different practical activities which includes; Orientation which introduced me to the office (internship attachment place), Meat inspection, Farm visit, home visit, Castration of pigs, Castration of caprines, Ear heamatoma in dogs, Aural heamatoma in rabbit, Surgical removal of lyssa in dogs, Community sensitization, Vaccination of poultry, Vaccination of cattle, Amputation, Collection of samples from animal, Ear tagging. I have gained skills in communication, how to relation with work mates and searing of ideas, how to diagnose several diseases in livestock, drug prescription, how to come up with the dosage, skills reporting a clinical case, in writing a veterinary treatment report book after carrying out treatment skills in meat inspection, information flow in the office. Responsibilities undertaken during the training includes; mobilizing farmers for office or government programs, filling my log book with the daily activities that we under took, participating all the activities that were carried out during internship where necessary, cleaning field equipment after use, diluting vaccines for poultry farmers who come to buy them at the office, vaccinating birds for the poultry. This work also explains how the industrial training influences my future career and how industrial training activities are correlated with the lecture room knowledge. The industrial training was a very useful experience that exposed me to different practical skills in animal production and management, poor whether condition like heavy rain, inadequate transport facility made the internship a bit hard. I therefor recommend the office through the district administration to lobby for more motorcycle which will improve on the transport, I would also recommend that intern students coming after us would be taken for more outreaches to many other farms which would expose them to more cases that are faced by other farmers.
