Abstract:
This report contains and describes the activities implemented, skills and knowledge gained, challenges faced, conclusions and recommendations derived from the challenges faced at Arapai farm Arapai farm-BUAC is a farm owned by BUAC Institution with various enterprises i.e., dairy, poultry, cattle, piggery, Horticulture, Green House, Agroforestry etc. It is aimed at producing high quality and quantity products like milk, beef, pork, eggs, and chicken for the community. The industrial training at Arapai farm-BUAC attempted to provide practical skills, field practice and experience to enhance the theoretical knowledge that is learnt in class.
Therefore, my objectives were to acquaint myself with;
• The various animal husbandry practices.
• The various breeds of dairy cattle, pigs at Arapai farm-BUAC Animal diseases, their signs, symptoms, and treatment.
• Methods of pest control used by farmers in the animal enterprises.
• Pasture management and preservation (silage, hay making),
I was attached to pasture establishment and management under animal department in the orientation week. Activities like Dehorning in cattle, castration of boars, potting of Agroforestry seedlings, disease diagnosis and treatment, spraying etc. were implemented. I faced challenges like lack of veterinary drugs and equipment, lack of cooperation among group members, unfavorable climate. In conclusions the industrial training was conducted successfully, I gained skills in castration, disease diagnosis and treatment, yoghurt making, budding and grafting in plants. I would recommend that the farm manager should purchase veterinary drugs and equipment required for animal management, and other tools and equipment required at the farm. I would also recommend staff of BUAC to wire the farm for security purposes or the animal.
