A report on skills and qualifications gained during industrial training at Busitema University Arapai farm.

Abstract

Industrial training is an experience that is relevant to academic development of students where students put into practice what has been taught theoretically from class. This report is about industrial training which was carried out at Busitema University Arapai Campus Farm in Soroti district in eastern Uganda for nine weeks from 28th February 2022 to 30dl April 2022. The training is one of the modules carried out by all Busitema university students caried out on a weekly basis and it was done on both sections of crop and animal. This report has been made up of four chapters, chapter one contains the background, location, size of the institute, mission, goal, objective and organizational structure. Busitema university Arapai farm is located in Arapai, Sub-County, Soroti District in eastern Uganda.

Chapter two contains activities carried out in different sections such as banana plantation section where we performed activities like weeding of banana plants, banana establishment, plot allocation, weeding, making drainage channels and application of manure. Goat Unit where we carried out activities like spraying using acaricide, treatment, cleaning, third section was piggery section, in this unit we were to carry out activities like identification of breeds, feed formulation, castration, general cleanliness and treating of sick pigs, Then Dairy Section where we carried out treatment, pasture establishment, pasture management, cutting of Napier grass, general cleanliness, chopping of Napier grass, Agro Forestry where we conducted potting of mango seedlings, weeding, budding, grafting, propagation, and watering, general cleanliness. Greenhouse in this section we did the following fertilizer application, seed bed preparation, weeding, thinning, gap filling. Spraying, trellising and many more cattle unit. We carried out dehorning, treatment, diagnosis of diseases. Chapter three contains problems faced during the training in the field e.g., overcrowding of students, shortage of working materials. Chapter four; this chapter contains the conclusion and recommendation, in conclusion, the industrial training has met my expectation basing on the skills that have been imparted into me by the technicians.

And I would recommend the university farm management to organize extra programs like artificial insemination, meat inspection etc equip the intern students with the knowledge of carrying out artificial insemination and meat inspection.
