Outreach is one of the course modules done at Busitema University Arapai Campus aimed at equipping students with practical skills and exposing them to working conditions in specific courses studied. The university sends students to nearby village farmers around the university to do extension work. We carried out our outreach in Arapai parish zone Arapai sub county, Soroti district from 12th march to 16thApril, 2021. During our outreach, we held a lot of activities.
Emptying of the rubbish pit, raising of nursery bed, sucker mold raising, kitchen garden raising, citrus weeding, citrus spraying, citrus pruning, nursery bed weeding, nursery bed thinning and examination of orchard. This training had a lot of positive impact towards our future career plans because of the several skills that we obtained during that time. During outreach faced several challenges like Language barrier, inadequate requirements e.g., hoes, Limited time allocation, Carrying of heavy requirements like posts, Bad working conditions e.g., heavy rains and sunshine, poor, hunger dusty environment, laziness of the farmers. Chapter one describes the location of Arapai zone A and background of outreach, chapter two describes the activities that we carried out. Chapter three explains the challenges faced and skills learnt during the period of outreach and chapter four conclusions and our recommendations.
All in all, our outreach was successfully carried out because of the much practical knowledge that we got. However, there is a lot needed to improve the agricultural sector as there is tow production therefore there is need to greatly improve to modern farming practices and also adoption of sustainable agriculture therefore, I recommend the government of Uganda through agricultural workers to sensitize and teach farmers on ways and practices of modern. |
