Abstract:
I under took my industrial training at one of the farms under NAGRC&DB which is under LES. The study commenced on 21/5/2018 with orientation and ended on 28/5/2018 a period of 10 weeks. The training was for equipping students with practical skills and relating them to the theory obtained in class. The first two weeks I worked in dairy section. Then all students were given groups and belonged to group 2.1 then continued for another two weeks in piggery section as well as poultry section. The last four weeks in dairy section. Each section is independent of each other.
Dairy section is headed by Mr. Nuwamanya Clement and the activities carried out included dipping carried out to control ecto parasites such as ticks, milking in order to keep records and estimate productivity of cattle, and disease management of sick animals, cleaning to maintain hygiene. Poultry section is headed by Ms. Dorothy and activities include cleaning to maintain hygiene, feeding for maintenance, and egg collection for sorting in order to produce chicks for sale in the hatchery. Piggery section is under Mr. Rwakabuta Godfrey and the breed is Camborough. The activities under taken included injecting iron to piglets to prevent piglet anaemia, cleaning the sty for proper sanitation, and as well as treatment of sick pigs to maintain good health.
The challenges faced included inadequate water supply and cleaning tools in all the three sections of study. I recommend the management of NAGRC in particular LES to provide water storage tanks in the different sections of the farm, it should also provide more cleaning equipment in the sections of the farm.
In conclusion, the training was successfully done and I thank the management of LES for giving me an opportunity to train from their farm.
