Internship report conducted at Soroti catholic diocese integrated development organization [SOCADIDO]

Abstract

The industrial training was conducted at Soroti Catholic Diocese Integrated Development Organization (SOCADIDO). SOCADIDO is a development arm of Soroti Catholic Diocese in Eastern Uganda with its head offices at plot 27, Serere road, Soroti municipality. It is active in the districts of Amuria, Kaberamaido, Katakwi, Kumi, Soroti, Ngora and Serere. Its current interventions are large the fields of; Agricultural development for enhanced livelihoods and stability, Business and income generation, food security, Disaster risk reduction and climate change adoption. During the internship, the following activities were carried out; orientation, management practices on the banana plantation, making of cost manure, raising of nursery beds for vegetables, one week's workshop [caritas week], reporting, grafting, layering, budding, staking tomatoes, spraying, planting of beans, maize, watermelon, cucumber, pumpkin, attending meetings, and field work activities. The internship increased my skills in extension, agricultural development, nursery bed management, agronomic activities, computer skills and communication skills. I learnt more about culture and norms of work. I therefore recommend the organization to increase the number of demonstrations since most farmers learn practically than theoretically, procure seeds and equipment like hoes, ropes/strings, tape measures, among others in advance so as to make the work easier I also recommend the organization to purchase a sprinkler irrigation system if possible so as to promote the continuous production of vegetables even during the dry season Busitema University should increase on the period for internship to enable more learning
