Abstract:
Busitema university is a public university established by stator instrument number 22, 2007 enacted by the parliament on the 10/05/2007. the university is a multi-campus with seven (7) campuses namely; Arapai, Busitema, Kaliro, Mbale, Nagongera, Pallisa and Namasagali campus.
BUAC first started as an agricultural college in 1956 being officially opened by Dr. Cohen M. C. C. by offering CGA, DAP, DAP, DCP, APM and later introduced two more courses i.e. BSA and BAB in 2017.
Arapai campus is located 6.5km along Soroti-Moroto road the former Arapai agricultural college in Soroti district with an estimation of 671 hectares of land.
The objective of this IT is to expose the students to the community members in the field they are working with and enable them to put into practice the knowledge which has been acquired from class theoretically.
During the course of the training, various activities were carried out in two departments i.e. crop and animal which included the following; castration, aging of goats, disease identification and treatment, feed formulation, vaccination, breed identification, pruning, planting vegetables, weeding, spraying, potting, digging, planting etc.
However, knowledge and skills were attained in both departments which included the following;
Animal skills; Disease identification, treating sick animals, feed formulation for animals and birds using locally available feeds. Poultry disease identification and control measures.
Crop skills; Field marking, pests and disease identification and management, green house management, horticultural crop production and management, crop spraying techniques (using a knap sack sprayer).
Since the training involved much in practical activities like treating animals, spraying, weeding, etc., the training completed successfully. And I would like to recommend the university to buy enough tools like; Panga, axes, tape measures, pruning saws etc., in order to reduce limitedness in tools and equipment to be used during field activities like; field marking, pruning etc., to stock inputs like; agro-chemicals and drugs in the farm for proper parasites, pests and diseases control in the farm to reduce depopulation of animals and pest damages to crops.
