The industrial training was conducted at Kassajja stock farm in Mbale district for the period of ten weeks which was aimed at equipping the students with more practical and professional skills.
At the station there are mainly seven sections i.e. Goats, cattle, Apiary, Aquaculture, Orchard and Crop section. In each section I carried out different activities. In the cattle section they include, breed identification, disease diagnosis and treatment, Dipping, weighing, Al, dehorning, pregnancy diagnosis, castration. In the goats’ section, activities include; Breed identification de-worming, Animal Identification, spraying, and the Aquaculture section include, feeding and sampling.
The attachment equipped me with a number of skills important in animal production and also social life as I was able to interact with different farm workers and students of different institutions. These Include; Skill of diagnosing and treating different common livestock diseases basing on their clinic signs, how identification can be carried out in both cattle and goats, planning skills used in animal production, how to take records and the different types of records used m production, socialization skills, how to use an automatic syringe during drug administration, how to control both internal and external parasites in livestock and how to carry out pregnancy diagnosis.
I also held the following responsibilities during the framing; Spraying of animals to control external parasites, cleaning of the goats’ unit and treatment of sick animals where I was also able to take dally records of treatment
I recommend the management to invest some capital for renovation of some structures on the farm e.g. the milking parlor, goats’ unit and also to always supply drugs in time for effective treatment and control of diseases. I also recommend renovation of
accommodation structures for students doing internship for proper safety of both students and their property. |
