The field attachment was carried out from Busitema University Arapai Campus Farm located in Arapai sub-county in Soroti District along Moroto road, from 203t of May to 26th of July/2019.
The farm is owned by the university and deals majorly on animal section and crop section which consists of so many activities. A number of animal and crop management practices were carried
out during my stay at the farm such as de-worming, repairing cattle and goats crush, aging of animals, spraying cattle& goats against ticks and pigs and lice and mange. Weeding and spraying crops, plus identification of diseases in both animals and crops with the corresponding treatments
During the IT under crop section where was allocated I carried out various activities that included field marking, planting different types of crops, crop protection, pests and disease identification and their control measures, gap filling, etc. and in animal section activities included deworming, spraying, restraining, kraal repairing, chick: brooding etc.
I also gained skills and knowledge in crop production like identification of citrus varieties, field marking techniques using the right angle method, spacing of different types of crop, identification of pests and diseases in crops such as bacterial within tomatoes and the methods of harvesting; drying, storing, plus the common tools used in crop and animal production.
While in. the. training learnt a lot of things both practical y and theoretically that gave me more knowledge to add to that one that we learnt from class about crop and animal production, lot of activities were carried out from the field with maximum care to avoid problems of during data analysis
I wish to request that the farm administration should improve on their infrastructures such as farm buildings roads in order to ease transportation and storage of crop produce and also open up the irrigation systems to avoid wilting of crops and water for livestock in the farm during shortage and on dry spells. |
