Design and construction of a disinfection system at Busitema university

Abstract

Access to a reliable and sustainable water supply system is an essential factor in ensuring the well-being and development of any community. Unfortunately, Busitema University, like many rural areas, faces significant challenges in securing a consistent safe drinking water supply, leading to adverse effects on the general community health. To address this pressing issue, this study proposed the design and implementation of a disinfection system using a Klorman cartridge on a bypass of the 3-inch PVC pipeline for one of the branches for the Busitema university’s water supply system to ensure safe and clean drinking water for the university community. The study’s objectives included to determine the optimal chlorine dosage for Busitema University's water supply system, to design and construct the chlorine-based disinfection system and to test the performance of the disinfection system. To ascertain the effectiveness and sustainability of the proposed system, a case study approach was employed along the waterline to the students’ halls of residences and restaurant, involving extensive data collection, stakeholder consultations, and pilot projects. The data collected was analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods to assess the system's performance, reliability, and impact on the community's well-being. Ultimately, the successful implementation of a chlorine-based disinfection system in Busitema University showed the potential to provide safer drinking water to the students at the university
