dc.description.abstract In the field of wastewater management and sanitation, the effective and efficient handling of faecal sludge is a critical challenge. This project presents the design and implementation of an innovative automated level control shut-off mechanism for faecal sludge emptying machine at Busitema University, faculty of engineering and technology workshop. The primary goal of this mechanism is to precisely control the sludge level within an airtight drum, ensuring efficient operation and preventing overfilling. The core of the system relies on buoyant force generated by float balls submerged in the sludge. As the sludge level rises to a predetermined point, the buoyant force causes tension in a string, which is routed through a series of three smooth, single fixed pulleys. When the string becomes taut, it triggers a switch, resulting in the automatic shut-off of the engine and compressor, preventing further sludge intake that could damage the compressor. Key considerations in this project included material selection for the float balls (High-Density Polyethylene - HDPE), the design of a reliable sealing mechanism to maintain airtightness around the rod's entrance into the drum, and the calculation of the required buoyant force based on the weight of the floaters’ assembly. The proposed automated level control shut-off mechanism represents a significant step towards efficient and safe faecal sludge management, reducing the risk of overfilling and associated operational issues. Moreover, this project aligns with broader goals of sustainable sanitation and environmental responsibility. However, the automated level control shut-off mechanism for faecal sludge emptying machine is not yet efficient as expected. Hence further alterations are recommended based on the current design constraints. en_US
