Abstract:
The general objective of this study was to examine effects of traditional Male circumcision on pupils’ academic performance in Government Aided Primary schools of Wanale Sub County, Mbale District. The objectives of the study were (i) to determine the causes of traditional male circumcision on the pupils’ academic performance in Government aided Primary Schools of Wanale Sub County, Mbale District. (ii) to examine the effects of traditional male circumcision on pupils’ academic performance in Government aided Primary Schools of Wanale Sub County, Mbale District. (iii) to identify the measures that can be used to mitigate the effects of traditional male circumcision on the on pupils’ academic performance in Government aided Primary Schools of Wanale Sub County, Mbale District. The research designs used were Cross sectional and Case study. The sample size of the study was 171. Data was analyzed in two ways, for the case of demographic profile, percentage was used, and SPSS was used to analyze the 3 objectives of the study. Findings of the study; the overall mean in regards to objective one was 2.52 rated as moderate. For objective two, the overall mean was 2.24 rated as moderate, and for objective three, the overall mean was 2.77 rated as moderate. Conclusion of the study; in objective one, with overall mean of 2.52 rated as moderate, it was concluded that pupils’ were involvement in TMC as motivated by same causes such as need for transformation from childhood to adulthood, for objective two with the overall mean of 2.24 rated as moderate, it was concluded that traditional male circumcision led to effects such as health complications, and for objective three, it was concluded that stakeholders had not taken keen interest in mitigating the occurrence of TMC. Recommendations of the study; it is recommended that communities should be trained/sensitized on the types of issues that lead to traditional male circumcision and their effect on pupils. For objective two, it is recommended that the community where research was carried on should be sensitized on the effects of traditional male circumcision such that they may take it or not. For objective three, it is recommended that the government should come out strongly and implement the policies that talk against TMC.
