Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the optimum temperature required for accelerated BOD and COD removal during biological treatment process of domestic wastewater (grey water and black water). Results from the digestion tank showed 75.7% and 80.8% as the maximum BOD5 and COD removal efficiency respectively at a temperature of 300C. The daily BOD and COD removed were observed to fall gradually as the concentration of organic matter reduced. For both samples, the BOD and COD removed were observed to increase very slightly after three days at a temperature of 300C and this meant that at this temperature, most of the organic matter is removed by the microorganisms in less than 5 days. Further processing of the system effluent is recommended as it did not meet the quality standards specified by the national water and sewage cooperation and World Health Organisation.
